At Kenmore Family Dental, we believe in helping patients achieve smiles they can feel good about. Dental examinations give our dentists Dr Tom Hogerheyde and Dr Chris Plackner a chance to assess your current oral health and see if treatment is needed. The earlier we identify dental conditions, the less invasive and less expensive they are to treat.
Our goal is to provide high-quality preventive care that can help our patients avoid dental conditions and enjoy healthy smiles.
Coming to our clinic twice each year give our dentists the opportunity to examine your teeth and gums thoroughly. We also recommend x-rays—usually once a year—so we can see what is happening beyond what is visible to the naked eye. Regular oral cancer screenings check for abnormalities in your mouth; early detection of cancer dramatically increases survival rates.
Because you cannot have healthy teeth without healthy gums, we also focus on periodontal care. In many cases, people have gum disease without knowing about it, so they don’t receive treatment until the condition is beyond reversal. Not treating gum disease puts you at risk of tooth loss. It can also jeopardise your overall well-being since more and more studies are connecting gum disease to serious conditions such as diabetes and stroke.
Even the most diligent brushing and flossing cannot remove all of the plaque, the sticky, colourless film that forms between teeth and near the gum line. Plaque that is left to build up eventually hardens into visible calculus. The only way to remove this substance is with special dental instruments. Regular dental cleans ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy.
Depending on the current state of your oral health, we may customise an oral hygiene plan just for you. But for most patients, getting dental cleans twice a year is adequate. Those with gum disease might need them more frequently.
Minimising Dental Care Needs
Waiting too long between dental check-ups makes it difficult to detect problems early when treatment is likely easier. A small spot of tooth decay left untreated will continue to grow, and you might find that you need a root canal today when a filling would have stopped the problem if it had been detected. Needless to say, paying for a filling rather than a root canal is easier on family budgets. Seeing your dentist twice each year also reduces the chance of experiencing a dental emergency.
