Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

Patient education is at the cornerstone of our dental practice, and we pride ourselves on staying current with the latest in dental care. Dr Chris Plackner encourages patients to ask questions because well-informed patients tend to have better oral health.

We tend to hear the same questions from more than one patient, and we have included some of them here. If you don’t see your question listed, please feel free to give us a call or ask us at your next appointment.

We look forward to assisting you with all of your questions regarding your oral health!

Children's Dentistry

The most important thing parents can do to instil good dental habits in their children is to demonstrate them. Children tend to emulate the behaviour of their parents, so brushing and flossing with your kids is a great way to get them accustomed to looking after their teeth.

Make sure your children are using a small toothbrush with soft bristles that are gentle on teeth and gums. Kids under the age of six should use toothpaste that is specially formulated for children because they tend to swallow more of it than they spit out. Set a timer to ensure kids are brushing for a full two minutes. Help them floss between each tooth until they can do it properly themselves.

Show them how to keep their toothbrush safe from germs by rinsing it after brushing and storing it in a clean, dry location. Advise kids to wash their hands after going to the toilet and before they use their toothbrush to avoid spreading germs.

You might also encourage your children to eat a wide variety of fresh, healthy foods and to avoid sugary or starchy snacks. After eating, drinking a glass of water rinses the teeth and mouth and helps eliminate food particles and bacteria.

We recommend that your son or daughter’s first visit to the dentist take place as soon as his or her first teeth erupt—usually anywhere from six months to one year old. Although that might seem early, it enables us to start building a positive relationship between your child and the dentist. Many adults who are fearful of the dentist report that their anxiety began at a young age with an unpleasant experience at the dentist. We strive to help your child feel comfortable, safe and confident about dentist visits in the future.

Early visits to the dentist also give us a chance to monitor oral development in your child and address concerns in their earliest stages.

As your child gets older and more comfortable in the dentist chair, we will begin to include cleans as part of their routine check-ups. We may also recommend fluoride treatments and dental sealants to help keep tooth decay from forming if needed.

Bringing your kids to the dentist also provides us with an opportunity to educate both you and your child on proper oral home care. Until little hands have the dexterity to brush and floss properly, it’s up to mums and dads to ensure teeth are being cared for at home.

General Dentistry

Today’s modern dentistry and available anaesthetic ensure that most procedures are as pain-free as possible. Our dentists also offer gentle care that makes patients feel more comfortable than ever. If you are ever experiencing discomfort and want us to stop treatment, please let us know. We want to ensure that you have the best experience possible.

Our leading-edge technology means we can often provide shorter treatment times.

Many of the procedures required as part of your maintenance programme are naturally painless, including dental check-ups and cleans.

Rest assured, we are sensitive to your anxiety, and our entire team will work hard to ensure you feel calm and comfortable during your time with us. If you have concerns about dental pain, we invite you to contact our Kenmore, QLD dental practice ahead of your visit. We can go over anaesthesia options and talk in-depth about future treatments, so you know exactly what to expect. Often having a clear picture of a procedure sometimes helps to alleviate much anxiety about it.

We don’t want concerns about paying for needed treatment to prevent you from getting the dental care you need. You will find that at our practice, we are completely transparent about the cost of dental care. There are no surprises, and budgeting for needed treatment is that much easier.

Staying current with dental check-ups and cleans is a good way to keep the cost of dental care low. When you see us regularly, we can detect issues while they are still small—and treatment is almost always less expensive.

If you have financial-related enquiries, including concerns about how to pay for treatment, we invite you to call our Kenmore, QLD surgery directly.

Our goal is to provide the best dentistry available, regardless of your health funds coverage.

In addition to cash, credit card, direct debit and bank transfer, we accept:

  • Private health insurance
  • Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

We participate in the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, allowing for up to $1,000 in basic dental treatment over a two-year period for eligible two- to 17-year-olds. Please contact us for any additional questions or for more information.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option for people who wish to make a big difference in their smiles in a short amount of time. If your teeth are stained, gapped, oddly spaced or misaligned, porcelain veneers might be the answer you have been seeking to improve your smile. If you think of you the smile of your favourite celebrity, it was likely enhanced through cosmetic dentistry—and very likely through porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, translucent pieces of porcelain that recreate the look of your teeth because they are ideally spaced and shaped. Depending on what you want to change about your smile—shape, size or colour—veneers can do it in just a couple of visits to the dentist.

To apply porcelain veneers, we will need to remove a small amount of your existing tooth enamel, making the procedure a permanent one. This tiny amount—usually less than a millimetre—is necessary to make room for the veneers and to avoid teeth that look unnaturally thick.

We invite you to contact our dental clinic to talk about cosmetic dentistry options to achieve your smile goals.

Teeth Whitening

Your smile is your decision. If you choose to have cosmetic treatments, there is no reason to live with chipped, stained teeth. We have the technology, tools and techniques to restore your smile.

  • Teeth whitening—This quick, affordable cosmetic dentistry procedure provides great results in just one visit to the dentist. You can also use our take-home kit to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, or you can use the kits to refresh your smile, so we can help keep your teeth white and bright in the future.
  • Porcelain veneers—Many of your favourite celebrities have picture-perfect smiles as a result of this cosmetic procedure. Veneers are one option for camouflaging a variety of dental issues, including teeth that are gapped, too short or misaligned. This permanent solution will keep your smile straight, white and lovely for a good number of years with proper care.
  • Dental crowns—Although crowns are often used to strengthen a damaged tooth, they can also be used cosmetically to cover up a tooth that is badly stained or misshapen.

You don’t need to be embarrassed about your smile. We invite you to book an appointment for a cosmetic dentistry consultation at our Kenmore, QLD surgery. Together, we can come up with a customised plan that will help you achieve your goals for your smile.
